PHASE 1 PLANTING COMPLETE!
Thanks to the tireless effort of hundreds of community volunteers the forest project successfully planted 3,400 trees and 1,100 shrubs in the first phase of the Cathedral Village Forest Project on May 31 and June 1, 2024. A great time was had by all. It was heartening to see so many folks from all over the neighbourhood and the city pitch in to get all of the plants in the ground. The irrigation system is up and running and we think that most of the kinks have been worked out. Regardless, the rain and cool weather has provided the perfect conditions for our little trees and shrubs to put down roots in their new home. To all who participated, a hearty thank you, it is folks like you who are literally willing to pick up a shovel for your neighbours and neighbourhood who make Cathedral such a wonderful place to live.
For those who left the park on Saturday wanting more, fear not, we are only about half done. Please stay tuned for future updates on a fall and likely another spring planting.
MEDIA:
We were honoured by CBC and Radio Canada doing articles on the forest project over the planting days along with a lovely article in the Leader Post earlier in the spring.

ABOUT THE FOREST PROJECT
The Cathedral Village Forest Project is led by a group of Cathedral Village residents. The outcome is to plant a 1.7 hectare community forest in Les Sherman Park made up of 7,311 trees (one for each neighbourhood resident) and over 2000 fruiting shrubs. The City of Regina has given us approval to undertake this project in an area of the park west of the Neil Balkwill Civic Arts Centre along the banks of Wascana Creek.
Establishing an urban forest in this location will create new educational and recreational opportunities in our community as well as a habitat for local wildlife.
Trees clean our air, release oxygen slow the wind, increase shade and humidity, improve soil, provide shelter and food for wildlife and sequester carbon.
